Drying systems for the pulp and paper industry

In the modern pulp and paper industry, belt dryers make a significant contribution to the production of high-quality products. The drying systems ensure uniform and efficient drying of pulp, paper and other materials. The continuous drying process can be seamlessly and fully automated into existing or new production lines. In doing so, stela drying plants meet the highest requirements for process reliability, availability and operational efficiency.

Sustainability is gaining importance in production

Sustainability is an important issue in the manufacture of paper industry products. The challenges are both in terms of raw material use and energy consumption. The proportion of recycled materials will be increased and alternative raw materials will be developed. As in other industries, work is being done to establish a circular economy. One possibility is to create closed technological circuits with complete recycling. Alternatively, materials that are biodegradable are also being developed. Thanks to the circular economy, sufficient pulp-based products should also be available in the future.

Drying products in the pulp and paper industry

The applications and processes are diverse - just like stela drying systems. The drying goods can be divided into the following categories:

  1. Primary products:
    • Pulp: The main raw material for papermaking, which is obtained from wood or other plant fibres
    • Paper: The final product produced in different shapes and qualities

  2. Secondary products:
    • Recycled fibres: Fibres that are recovered from waste paper and reprocessed
    • Semi-processed materials: Partially processed fibres used in various stages of papermaking

  3. By-products:
    • Residual wood and bark: These materials are produced in wood processing and are often dried to be used as fuel or in other industrial processes
    • Sludges and residues: These are produced during pulp and paper production and often need to be dried to facilitate disposal or further processing

  4. Special products:
    • Chemically treated fibres: Fibers treated with special chemicals to achieve certain properties
    • Coated papers: Papers coated with different coatings to meet specific applications

Drying to develop new raw materials

In particular, belt drying systems are used in the areas of secondary, by-products and special products. For example, paper sludge is also dried or recycled material. Drying the bark, which occurs during debarking, can also be useful before thermal use.
In principle, drying simplifies handling, makes the fabrics transportable and optimises further processing. In this way, belt drying systems from stela Laxhuber contribute to the development of new raw materials in a wide variety of processes and bring us one step closer to the circular economy.

Efficient drying technology with RecuDry®

For a sustainable economy, an optimal use of energy for drying is of great importance. For this reason, stela Laxhuber offers extremely efficient drying systems with the patented RecuDry® technology.

Use of industrial waste heat – energy concepts from stela Laxhuber

As a partner of our customers, we at stela not only create individual drying solutions, but also holistic energy concepts. Our goal is the most cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solution for heating the dryers. A central aspect here is the use of various waste heat sources to reduce operating costs without causing additional emissions. The residual heat of many processes, for example from the exhaust air from industrial coolers, is optimally usable for the low temperature level of the stela drying plants.
